Eleanor Oliphant has learned how to survive – but not how to live

Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.

Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.

One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.

Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than… fine?

I bought this completely on a whim with no expectations or knowledge of the fact it won an award, and my goodness am I glad I did. I don’t want to spoil anything for the reader, but you will not regret buying this book.
  • One of the best books I’ve ever read

This truly has been an emotional read from start to finish. Eleanor has made me cringe at her bluntness, cry for her and really laugh out loud to some of her antics. As a Scot I was very happy it was set in Scotland. I’m actually really sad I’ve finished it! Really hope this is made into a film.
  • Not a surprise

I read this book after it was featured in a famous book club. I was really disappointed, there is nothing new in this story and definitely not worth all the fuss about it. I did not feel close to the main character and found it all rather insipid.

First time I've written a book review ( and I'm 40!) ..... The story was perfect... It made me want to jump into the book and meet Eleanor and Raymond ....heart warming , quirky , sad and funny ...I have never felt so disappointed that a book has come to an end .....
  • Very funny and a true insight into a different mindset

I really related to this character of how she thought how she acted how she saw things and the little things that she found comfort or love in. If you can relate to this character you will see how very cleverly this book is written. It allows you to see thing through a troubled mind due to people personal experiences such as upset drama catastrophe and grief but not to judge people or single people out because they act respond or do things differently. It's also very very very funny this is the one book that I laughed out loud in nearly every chapter, dry humour at times and very unique humour but all the same incredibly funny! My reason for only four stars was because I thought the ending wasn't very strong I was left a tad disappointed, predictable not exciting and didn't leave me feeling fulfilled but still worth a read for the giggles ... if you understand the character! Look forward to the film and hope the ending is much more powerful than the book :0)
  • Would highly recommend

Didn't want this book to end. Although I thought it a little slow to begin with, in the end I thought it "completely fine" !!
