J.D. Vance grew up in a rural Applachian town that struggled with poverty. Hillbilly Elegy is J.D. Vance's memoir. Vance tells his family's story and examines the lives of white people in America who are part of the working class. Vance's grandparents were, as he says, "dirt poor," and moved from Kentucky to Ohio to try to escape poverty.
