Grave Sight Harper Connelly had a lucky escape when she was hit by lightning: she didn't die. But sometimes she wishes she had died, because the lightning strike left her with an unusual talent: she can find dead people - and that's not always comfortable. Everyone wants to know how she does it: it's a little like hearing a bee droning inside her head, or maybe the pop of a Geiger counter, a persistent, irregular noise that increases in strength as she gets closer. It's almost electric: a buzzing all through her body, and the fresher the corpse, the more intense the buzz.

Harper and her brother Tolliver make their living from finding the dead, for desperate parents, worried friends ... and police departments who have nowhere else to look. They may not believe in her abilities, but sometimes the proof is just too much for even the most sceptical of police chiefs to deny.

But it's not always easy for someone like Harper, for the dead *want* to be found - and too often, finding the body doesn't bring closure; it opens a whole new can of worms.

    After reading the sookie stackhouse novels I was left wanting more. Thought I would give this book a try and was pleasantly surprised. Interesting idea can't wait to read the next one ;)
  • Great supernatural novel

    I bought the "grave" novels having read Harris' True Blood series. I really enjoyed the book. It can be slow in parts but a good read nonetheless. I really liked Harper and Tolliver, although Harper's neediness and lack of confidence grates a bit as the book goes on. Not as good as the True Blood series but worth reading.

    I love the True Blood books & thought I would read this series. From the blurb I didn't think I would like them but I couldn't put them down! Another great set from Charlaine and have recommended them to my friends.

    Having loved the Sookie Stackhouse series I was somewhat sceptical about whether this book would just feel like Sookie with a new gift, but despite the narrative being unmistakably Charlaine Harris the character of Harper is strong enough to shake off Sookie's ghost. Although perhaps not as instantly likeable as Sookie Harper has her own tale to tell and Harris does this as eloquently as ever. An easy-to-read mystery which manages to avoid the trashy vibe so often encountered in light literature, Grave Sight is compelling and rewarding - if a little predictable in parts. It hasn't entirely filled the spot left by Sookie (and Eric, of course!) but as a first instalment it certainly has the makings of a great series. As with the Southern Vampire stories the premise requires a pinch of salt and a suspension of disbelief. However, escaping into a world vastly different from our own will always be the perfect tonic to a bad day at work; Harper's life definitely made mine seem that little bit easier to bare. If you've read the Sookie novels I would definitely recommend this to keep you going until the next instalment, and if you haven't then give this a go until you can spare the time to read the whole Sookie series in one - you won't want to put them down. Overall a good read with nice characters, although the extras are less well defined than the cast of the Southern Vampire series.
