About the author

J.R.R.Tolkien (1892-1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing ‘The Hobbit’, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Silmarillion’, plus other stories and essays. His books have been translated into over 40 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.

    Definitely my all time favourite read. The story is beautifully written and it's almost a shame when it comes to the end. There are a few things that need addressing by the editors for this iBook. There are occasional duplicate words and phrases in the text and there is also a whole page missing from the appendices which I noticed from reading the paper version. Clearly not enough care has been taken with the proof-reading..

    LOTR is one of the greatest works I have ever read and I have gone through many classics down the years. It is epic in all senses of the word and yes, it IS a great big beast of a book to digest, but every single page is worth it. Reading Tolkien's masterpiece is an adventure that you should not deny yourself. I have been through it only once so far, but intend to re-read this a few more times in my lifetime. Stunning and influential.
