John Yudkin (8 August 1910 - 12 July 1995) was a British physiologist and nutritionist, whose books include This Slimming Business, Eat Well, Slim Well and This Nutrition Business. He became internationally famous with his book Pure, White and Deadly, first published in 1972, and was one of the first scientists to claim that sugar was a major cause of obesity and heart disease.

Robert H. Lustig, M.D. has spent the past sixteen years treating childhood obesity and studying the effects of sugar on the central nervous system and metabolism. He is the Director of the UCSF Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health Program and also a member of the Obesity Task Force of the Endocrine Society. His YouTube video lecture Sugar: The Bitter Truth has received over two million hits, he recently appeared on the BBC 2 documentary The Men Who Made Us Fat and his book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease is being published in Autumn 2012.

    If this is not on the reading list of every health-related undergraduate course - from sports and fitness, through to nutrition and public health - it ought to be. Too much is written today on fad diets, fat alone and calories independent of thorough detail and rigour. Whereas this text acts as a spotlight onto the damning politics and corruption fuelling a global food industry - an industry leading to a global health crisis. As part of a balanced collection of texts: a must-read.

    This a clear example of the miseducation we're accustomed to at school and at home as well as in the media. Pure, white and deadly is a book that should be on the school curriculum to read and study. We are not not educated about food in schools. People say food education should be taught at home but most our parents are of a generation where they followed eating habits from generation upon generation of the family tree. Food is just given at dinner time there is no intellectual dialect as to what we are putting in our body. (Feel lucky that you have food at all don't ask questions). That's why is up to the new generation growning up in the Information Age to make others aware the dangers of certain foods especially white sugar. This book Pure, White and Deadly sets the standard of teaching the masses of the dangers of white sugar. Thank you Dr Yudkin, I shall spread your teachings
